HOT BUTTERED RUM!

This is one of those drinks like a Tom and Jerry, that seems so familiar to me and yet…not; so familiar and yet…somehow it also seems like it would not be very good. This recipe came right out of Playboy’s Host and Bar Book! Which is my favorite drink book of all time. The best in its class.

But, you can’t argue with the facts. This really wasn’t that great, right off the bat.

The first sip was reminiscent of huffing paint and kind of burned my nostrils with booze fumes. It was a little shocking. I did, however, feel the effects of the alcohol almost immediately. My “scientific theory” is that the heat made the alcohol permeate my inner mouth tissues really fast and since the mouth is so close to the brain, it basically was in my brain within seconds. Fortunately, the effects of the alcohol made another sip of the hot buttered rum seem appealing. And thus it went until the drink was done.

HOW TO MAKE A TUSCAN MULE

How To Make a Ramos Gin Fizz!

Henry Charles Ramos seems to have been one of the greatest barmen in history. He was certainly famous in his time, anyway. The Ramos Gin Fizz is what he is remembered for and when I found this old bar menu from a restaurant (now closed) in San Antonio that claimed to be “Home of the Famous Ramos Gin Fizz” AND it included a recipe, well, clearly I had to try it out.

MINT JULEP COCKTAILS!

We don’t try to hide the fact that we like to drink - sometimes while shooting. This episode was shot on a Saturday afternoon. The drinks were delicious and we wrapped the shoot by partaking in the fine Austin tradition of “porch-drinking.” By dark, the bottle of Wild Turkey was empty and we headed to the Crown and Anchor Pub for cheeseburgers and pitchers of beer.

Hilah found this recipe card in her Grandma’s recipe box. It’s for a Cocktail that apparently won some big award in 1934. We’ve tried finding a more accurate or modern name for it, but haven’t had much luck. Some guy on our Facebook group thought it was called a “hoar frost” but I think he was just talking about the color of Hilah’s hair. View high resolution
